Bee Breath (Bhramari)

A soft humming out-breath, like a bee - one of the quickest ways to feel calm.

  • Calms nerves and an anxious mind
  • The long hum naturally slows your breathing
  • Nice before sleep

Breathe IN through the noseBreathe OUT with a soft 'mmmm' hum

How to do it

  1. Sit tall and close your eyes. Relax your jaw, lips gently closed.
  2. Breathe in slowly through your nose.
  3. Breathe out with a soft, steady 'mmmm' hum, like a bee.
  4. Feel the gentle buzz in your face and head. Let the out-breath be longer than the in-breath.
  5. Repeat 5-7 times, then sit quietly for a few breaths.
Go gently: Keep the hum quiet and comfortable. Avoid it with an ear infection.
From the Vedic texts · Bhagavad Gita 6.19

The Gita compares a calm mind to 'a lamp in a windless place that does not flicker'. The steady hum of bhramari is a simple way to feel that stillness.
